We are proud to work with all the Catholic schools across our two local authority areas, particularly as the Trust grows and benefits from the expertise and knowledge that other schools joining in the future will bring.

Sports Premium

At St Mary’s we help children achieve the fundamental movement skills needed to be successful in PE and sports, and develop a life-long love of being active.

These skills of agility, balance and co-ordination are taught through REAL PE lessons.

Alongside this class teaching, we offer a variety of clubs that children can take part in as part of our extracurricular school provision; developing and building skills in football, athletics, running, netball, gymnastics, dance and hockey.

We have employed two sports coaches to help deliver expertise coaching in a range of sports, provide children with extra opportunities to get active and keep healthy.

To help the children lead active lives, all the children take part in regular school fitness activities as well as two hours of physical education each week.

Children in Year 5 have an opportunity to go swimming at a local pool in Sowerby Bridge.

We have an annual sports day to which parents are invited and we always celebrate Sports Week in school.

Our playground, with a wide variety of activities, also offers challenges to develop agility skills.

We also love to compete in a variety of inter-school competitions.

Sports Premium Funding

What is the Sports Premium?

The government provides targeted funding for primary school sport. The funding is jointly provided by the Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport, and should be spent on improving the quality of sport and PE for pupils.

Purpose of the funding

All schools have to spend the sport funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but there is freedom to choose how we do it. At St Mary’s we have always recognised the contribution of PE to the health and well-being of children. In addition, we believe that an innovative and varied PE curriculum, extra-curricular opportunities and physical activity generally have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of all children.
