My name is Mr David Hymas and I am your Chair of the Academy Council. Along with my fellow Councillors, I set the strategic plan for the school, in line with the Bishop’s vision, to ensure that all pupils can achieve and flourish in our school.

I have served on the Governing Body and now, the Academy Council for 7 years and have two children at the school. Being part of one of the oldest Catholic schools in existence is a great privilege, but moreover, being able to work with our parents, teachers, staff, and students as they grow in learning and in virtue is a real joy. I have seen the school go from strength to strength and this year is no exception.

If you would like to know about the work of the Academy Council, please do not hesitate to contact me on chair@st-marys-halifax.calderdale.sch.uk

I was appointed as a Diocesan Foundation Governor in 2013 and am delighted to be part of the Academy Council of St Mary's.  I relish the opportunity to be part of such a wonderful school and to help all concerned to ambitiously achieve their full potential.  I am a Permanent Deacon in St Mary's, Halifax, in the Diocese of Leeds.

Previously, I worked for Halifax PLC, which became part of HBOS PLC and then Lloyds Bank for over 30 years and retired as an IT Director for Lloyds Commercial Bank. Here I developed many skills and experiences which I can now leverage for the benefit of the school.  My wife, Caroline, and I have three grown up children (Kathryn, Sean and Liam)

Devoted listener, I advocate a school where children, staff and stakeholders relish the opportunity of building together a better community through the highest education standards. This can be achieved in a school where respect, equality, diversity, mutual support, creativity and safeguarding are embedded in the core values. In a fast-changing world, this endeavour must be regularly assessed and adjusted, to preserve what our children have already achieved and to progress further.

My educational background:

BSc Agricultural engineer

MSc Economics and Social Policy (Time Series Analysis and Forecasting)

Trained Psychotherapist (TEACCH based Behavioural approach of Autism + The Epilepsies awareness)

I was appointed as a Diocesan Foundation Governor in October 2019. Two of my three children attended St. Marys when we moved to Yorkshire in 2001. The school was a welcoming and spiritual base which equipped them with the skills and confidence to progress and I am delighted now to have the opportunity to contribute to the life of the school.

I have spent most of my working life in education with my last post being Vice Principal at Barnsley College where I managed performance and funding. I look forward to using my skills to benefit the school.

I live in Halifax with my wife Julie. Our three children are now grown up and have launched their own careers. To relax I enjoy reading, going to live events and travelling.

I have had the privilege of being a governor at Saint Mary's Catholic Primary School since being appointed parish priest of Saint Mary's parish in February 2016. It is a joy to be associated with such a wonderful school. It is a particular delight to see how the Catholic ethos of the school drives every area of school life. As a former youth chaplain in the diocese, I am very keen to ensure that we do all that we can to ensure that the young people within our diverse community are given the opportunity to live life to the full. In my spare time I enjoy cooking and reading. I also enjoy long walks with my dog.

Category of Councillor: Foundation

Term of Office:  25.09.2021 - 24.09.2025

Committees served on: Standards and Pupil Experience Committee, Discipline / Appeals Committee

Position(s) of Responsibility: Link Governor for Safeguarding and Child Protection, SEN/ Inclusion, Premium, Class 5JP

Knowing that my eldest son, Isaac, was starting school in 2017, I wanted to find a way in which I could participate in the life of St Mary's. To that end I am now a member of the Academy Council, having been appointed as a Foundation Governor from the start of the academic year, 2017/18.

As the years have passed, my son, Tobias, and my daughter, Leah, have joined St Mary’s and so I am looking forward to a long journey in helping the school continuously grow and improve.

My working background is in Education as I am a qualified primary teacher and I am also an active member of our Catholic community; I help to run the Children’s Liturgy that takes place during our Sunday Masses and I work with Miss Smith, Mrs Paquim and Father Martin to help the children of both St Mary's school and St Mary’s parish prepare for their Sacraments.

Louise Paquim

Category of Councillor: Staff

Term of Office:  1.11.18-31.10.22

Committees served on: Standards and Pupil Experience Committee

Position(s) of Responsibility: n/a

I graduated from the University of Hull in 2007 and was lucky enough to begin teaching at St Mary’s straight away. As a former pupil, it has always held special memories for me and I was delighted at being given the opportunity to be part of the teaching staff. The majority of my teaching experience has been in Year 3 and 4 and it is a pleasure to watch the children I first meet as 7 or 8 year olds mature and develop throughout their time in Key Stage 2. One of the most significant aspects of my job is supporting the children as they prepare to receive the sacraments of Confession and Communion in year 3. It is a privilege to be part of their journey of faith at such a special and memorable time.

 Rosaleen Somerville-Jones

Category of Councillor: Foundation

Term of Office:  18/07/2019 - 17/07/2023

Committees served on: Standards and Pupil Experience Committee, Discipline / Appeals Committee

Position(s) of Responsibility:  Link Governor for Wellbeing and Class 4/3GS

I was appointed as a Foundation Governor in July 2019 and alongside fellow Councillors, share a real desire to help provide children with the best possible education. I live in Halifax with my husband Ty, and we have one son, Ethan, who graduated from York University last year and is now forging his own career.

My working life started at the Halifax Building Society and ended with Lloyds Banking Group.  They now tell me I am a Lady of Leisure! I love reading and I can usually be seen being taken for a walk by our Labrador! One way or another I have been involved with children and young people for nearly 20 years with specific responsibilities as a PTA chair and as Team Manager of Halifax Swimming Club, a post I held for some 12 years.

I count myself as very fortunate to have this new opportunity, as a School Councillor, to continue to give something back to my local community and to play a part in enabling young people to make the most of their potential. I believe passionately in offering children a rich and balanced curriculum that focusses on personal as well as academic growth and achievement and  I am delighted to have the opportunity to share my experience and enthusiasm for learning with the children, staff, parents and Governors as we all work to promote our school’s aims and vision.

Position(s) of Responsibility:  Link Governor for Class 2AM

When my daughter first started school in 2019, I knew I wanted to be a part of her educational life at St Mary’s. I decided to participate in any way I could and so started to attend the PTFA meetings and volunteer with events they held. As soon as the Academy Councillor role became available, I applied, and so here I am now. Knowing I can now be more involved in helping the school achieve its strategies and goals, is something I am looking forward to. I am very keen to help the schools multi-cultural and diverse community achieve all the offerings the school can provide them and also offer the children further opportunities.

Outside of this role, I work as a Project Manager for an IT firm and when I’m not working, I volunteer as a scout leader, enjoy gardening, reading, trying out new recipes and travelling.
